Where Art & Hotel Collide: Sept 6-8

Ben Bethel, one of the most visionary hotel owners in the United States, has done it again.

On the first weekend in September 20+ Phoenix artists will collide with The Clarendon Hotel to form ARTELPHX.

We’re turning The Clarendon Hotel and Spa into a living art exhibition with dozens of artists featuring performance art, building projections, a laser tunnel, dance, and the conversion of hotel rooms into art exhibits.  It’s going to be truly amazing.” ~ Ben Bethel, Owner+General Manager

Bethel knows a fair bit about innovative concepts like this. He’s been declared “America’s Most Innovative Hotelier” by Hotel Business and “One of ’10 to Watch’ ” by the International HotelWorld Conference. With preference given to artist pop-up art that includes innovative designs and multi-media installations, and with many featuring live performances, sound, and video, and exterior projections going into the mix, this is an event not to be missed.

And before you tell your friends about this great event, don’t forget to mention that in the next few weeks, The Clarendon is getting a new spa. Is this a big deal, you ask? It’s so sweet, this new spa, that Bethel is changing the Hotel’s name to The Clarendon Hotel and Spa.

The full-service spa features five treatment rooms, including three
treatment rooms large enough for romantic couples massages.  Guests
can elect to have their services performed in one of The Clarendon Hotel and Spa’s poolside cabanas, gorgeously located next to the 60 foot-wide, glass, water wall, or on the rooftop SkyDeck overlooking the city skyline and surrounding mountain ranges. Tod Miller, the founder of Beyond Massage Therapy, is their Spa Director. He’s been featured on “Shark Tank” and “The Doctors”, has competed in several dozen Triathlons and specializes in something called BodyWalking.  The Spa is open from 9am to 6pm daily, but all services are available 24 hours a day.

The final unveiling of the Artel Phx exhibit at The Clarendon Hotel and Spa is scheduled for…

“This Golden Ticket is Giant, Indy!”

On June 30th of this month, this coming Sunday, the sun will raise the temp over 115. (At precisely 2:47pm, on June 26, yesterday, in 1990, the temperature hit 122 degrees. That record is unbroken. We hope this weekend it will remain that way.) And yes, anything over 110 is plenty hot enough, but their are two golden reasons you should get exited about this coming Sunday:  “Indie Week” starts!

Here be ye Golden Coupon.

It’s the ticket to saving 20% off purchases from 282 local Arizona businesses being honored and recognize by Local First Arizona. This list of participating businesses will be continually added to through the month of June. Simply print the Golden Coupon from the LFA website or pull it up on your smartphone and use it at as many participating locations as you like (some restrictions may apply).

Local businesses are the backbone of this country and we have a lot to thank them for.”  ~ Local First AZ news page

The official name is “National Independents Week”, but if you’re cool and hip “Indie Week” is the bee’s knees. (I may have lost some cool points on that last bit).

What better time to thank independent local businesses who are responsible for local job creation and so much community involvement?

Independents Week is especially important in Arizona during the slow summer months for many of our local business owners,” says Kimber Lanning, Director of Local First Arizona.

Our hope is that consumers will learn about the value of supporting local businesses during Indie Week, and then continue to support our independent businesses far beyond our week-long celebration.”

Step up and take the pledge to support Indie Week. Everyone who takes the pledge will automatically be entered into a contest to win a staycation: the package includes a one night stay at Globe’s Noftsger Hill Inn Bed and Breakfast and a meal at Safford’s A Step Back in Time Coffee & Deli.

When:   Sunday, June 30 through Sunday, July 7

Where:  All over Arizona in 282 independent businesses.

I chose to work with HomeSmart because it is locally-owned. I left my previous brokerage because it was bought out by an out-of-state company. I put my money where my mouth is and I will do that with the purchase or sale of your home. Please give me a call at 602-456-9388 or email me at ken@getyourphx.com.

Celebrate Your Independents! July 1-7

Not only will we be celebrating our independence come July, but we’ll also be celebrating independents. That’s because July 1 through July 7, 2012 is the 10th anniversary of National Independents Week (or “Indie Week” if you’re cool). This is the week that everyone is encouraged to shop locally and support independent businesses.

A great place to start is by visiting Local First Arizona where you can find a directory of local business and learn how to “Shift the Way you Shop”. According to the website, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $73 remains in the local economy and $27 leaves . In contrast, when you shop at a business that is not locally-owned, only $43 remains in the local economy and $57 leaves.

Shopping local re-circulates your money over and over, creating more tax revenue to the state and your community. Not only do local businesses help to drive the economy, but they also support sustainability and add character and uniqueness to the community. You’ll also probably get better and more personal service.

In honor of Independents Week, Local First Arizona is offering a “Golden Coupon” where you can get 20% off at participating local establishments.

So, go ahead and take the pledge to shop locally and support your community merchants. Then head down to the farmer’s market, the Melrose District or your favorite local restaurant and help build our economic independence during Independents Week.

Op Ed | Kimber Lanning on the Amazon Effect

The following is an Op Ed piece from Kimber Lanning Published in the Downtown Phoenix Journal.

I really encourage y’all to read this and share it. Kimber is leading the discussion about how we need to protect our local businesses and how we need to reform our out-dated tax structure. The more we let on-line retailers get away without paying their fair share, the more we shift the tax burden to you and me.

Please read and share!!

———————

We are surrounded by small businesses in Downtown Phoenix, and we know much of Downtown’s success rests on the shoulders of these business owners. As we survey the current economic climate, it is critical to understand the impact a national retailer can have on the health of our local economy. Kimber Lanning, founder and executive director of Local First Arizona, provides insight on the ramifications of the current sales tax impasse between the State of Arizona and Amazon.

Last week at the Arizona State Senate subcommittee hearing Don Isaacson, the lead attorney for Amazon, took the podium to make the case that economies change over time. “We all remember the days of mom and pops,” he said, “and then there were the days of the big box retailers….” I surmise this to be a very honest glimpse into the world vision Amazon holds, but what does it mean for Arizona?

For the moment, let’s forget the fact that there are over 40,000 independent businesses operating in Arizona today, with a payroll of around 21 billion per year, and let’s focus on our state’s economy and what would be left of it if Amazon’s vision becomes reality.

Harvesting Communities Through Local Business

Its that time of year again! The Local First Fall Festival is on!

(Added extra: this year it actually feels like fall!)

Did you know that Arizona is home to more than one hundred local and organic food providers, over one hundred advertising and marketing agencies, more than two hundred art suppliers and venues, and other great local businesses?

I would not blame you if you didn’t know that. It’s not like you hear about it on our local news. (But that’s a different post.)

Local First Arizona is an organization that supports local businesses around the state. The local first philosophy is driven by the benefits the local business have on the economy and community culture. This weekend LFA will be hosting their seventh annual fall festival. The festival boasts a ton of food from independent eateries and 66 local vendors.

Last year over 6,000 participants joined local businesses for family friendly fair. Musicians and bands and bands from across the state will provide entertainment. There will be local wineries and breweries on site for the adults as well as activities, like rock climbing, for the kids.

But why support local businesses? The simplest answer is it’s socially responsible. As our economy comes back, we need to support our local communities first. By patronizing our local businesses, we are directly supporting our own communities by keeping tax dollars in the state.

Join your fellow locavores this Saturday at The Duck and Decanter, 1651 E Camelback, from 10-4 pm. You can read more about Local First Arizona on their website

It’s Restaurant Week Arizona!

As those of us with steak sauce stained shirts and full bellies already know, the fourth annual Arizona Restaurant week is in full swing. This year, over 200 restaurants are offering prix-fixe menus to hungry patrons looking for a deal.

All the restaurants are offering three course meals for $20, $30 or $40 person, excluding drinks, tax and tip. There are even some places offering two for $30.

As some of you may recall, when restaurant week started in 2008 there were less than 100 valley restaurants involved. But at $29 a meal, patrons rolled in by the hundreds. By 2009, the celebration had spread all the way to Tucson and this year they are state wide with four restaurants in Flagstaff.

Of course, you don’t have to pack up the whole family to enjoy a fantastic meal. Some of the finest dining restaurant week has to offer is from Phoenix food institutions.

Durant’s, which opened in 1955, is a swanky, old-school, red leather booth, seafood and steak house that serves a classic menu and great drinks. As jack Durant said himself “Good friends, Good Steaks, and the Best Booze, are the necessities of life,” If you agree, Durant’s is the place for you this restaurant week.

If you’re a meat and potatoes kind of person, Stockyards is “Arizona’s Original Steak house.”   Stockyards started as a favorite meeting place for local cattlemen, bankers and politicians. If your looking for the taste of history, Stockyard joined the historical registrar in 2004 and will be helping Arizona celebrate its centennial this February. Or just skip the history and try one of their six restaurant week desserts.

Avanti, open in 1974, is classic Italian at its best. The romantic, zebra striped restaurant is still owned by the two original partners from Sorrento, Italy and is known for its impeccable food and unbelievable service.

If you’re looking to soak in Arizona in all its glory, you have to hit up El Chorro. Originally opened in 1937, El Chorro Lodge sits at the base of the Mummy Mountains offering classic Arizonan inspired cuisine. Many will agree with me when I say the best part of El Chorro’s restaurant week menu has to be their Gooey Caramel Cake which has been tempting patrons for years.

Of course there are our favorites. Christopher’s and Crush is a new comer, with only three years on the block, but their hip atmosphere keeps patrons coming back for more. For you locavores, St Francis is offering fresh, rustic cuisine from local farms and even better kids eat FREE.  Ticoz Resto-Bar offers Latin-Arizonan Fusion cuisine, not to mention to die for tacos, for those of us looking to spice up our life.

Dining in Phoenix can be a wonderful adventure. With only 9 Days to work through the complete Restaurant Week menu, you can expect to see everyone out for a great meal at these Arizona standbys.
