26 Blocks

I remember standing in Melbourne, Australia a few years ago. This city has everything: live music, art, theater, gardens, food, etc. I was thinking about whether I should move there. Luckily I did not.

However, I got a strange uneasy feeling about the place. I could not put my finger on it until much later. I realized that I could never live there because it is finished. Somebody else, long ago, defined that city. There is very little to add.

This is why I love Phoenix and Arizona. Despite many of the challenges we face, this is our place to define and our identity to create. It is all ours if we want it.

In that spirit, I was particularly interested in the work of writer Joey Robert Parks and others with their 26 Blocks project. They describe it the best:

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN… if 26 of the best writers in Phoenix were paired with 26 of the best photographers in Phoenix?

AND WHAT IF… you asked them to create their work within certain boundaries (writers: 500 words or less, any genre; Photographers: up to four pictures in one image, any style) and to capture the past, present or future of 26 randomly selected downtown Phoenix city blocks?

There actually is a great deal of interesting history in Phoenix and so many stories to tell. Could there be some future “Phoenix sound”, like there was a Seattle sound? Will there be writers and artists who speak uniquely of Phoenix?

I think so.

Look for  26 Blocks to be a future feature of a Get Your PHX event, as they roll out their work over the course of this year.

Phoenix, AZ  (September 14, 2009) — The Grand Avenue Festival, an all day event on September 26, will be highlighting the history of the Lower Grand Avenue area and the many interesting adaptive re-use projects there as part of the day’s many festivities. Tickets are $ 10 per person and can be purchased by calling 602.391.4016 or by visiting the festival website at www.grandavenuefestivalaz.com. Proceeds from ticket sales for the guided walking tours will go to the Grand Avenue Merchants’ Association (GAMA).

Grand Avenue has a long, and storied history which continues to be added to today with the many new uses that have been popping up in the Lower Grand Avenue district (from Van Buren to the 1-10 Freeway overpass) – with many buildings reverting from industrial uses back to the original small retail and office uses that once lined this important connector to Wickenburg, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and points west. An influential factor in this renaissance has been the many innovative commercial adaptive re-use projects in the neighborhood: new owners have preserved parts of the existing vintage structures while making modern conversions that allow for more practicality in today’s world, including a myriad of hybrid uses.

Adaptive re-use of commercial buildings in older commercial districts is an important factor in creating true neighborhood sustainability, and for nurturing the small business community, particularly the arts. Many small, entrepreneurial businesses are attracted to the character these older structures lend to a neighborhood – and rents are more affordable than new construction.

This tour will focus on celebrating the unique history of Grand Avenue, as well as the wonderful adaptive re-use projects in the neighborhood, highlighting six projects along the street. Tour stops will include the following:

Sunnyslope Art Walk

Sunnyslope is a little north of CenPho, but they are doing a great job of community building.

My friend Chritina Plante with John C. Lincoln Hospital, who helps out with the Sunnyslope Art Walk wants you to know that there is a call for art for their October 10th Art Walk.

The application deadline has been extended to September 11th.

Have a look at the Sunnyslope website for submission details.

Trashy Sculpture Show Call For Entries

Beatrice Moore, one of our great arts leaders downtown, sent me this call for entries for the Trashy Sculpture Show.

This show will be hosted in the main room of the Bragg’s Pie Factory on Grand during the September 26th Grand Ave. Festival.

Works can hang from the rafters, be free standing, be attached to the walls, be attached to the parking lot fence or be hung from the trees in front of the building.  Work must be made primarily from trash or recycled materials.  Work will be exhibited through October.

I was thinking of submitting my 20-year old collection of used toothpaste tubes. They are my pride and joy.

This is going to be a great festival and a fun community-based show. I really look forward to it.

Time-Lapsed City

The folks over at Downtown Voices Coalition posted this yesterday.

Last month videographer Efrain Robles shot this time lapse video of downtown Phoenix as the sun sets and the traffic is heavy.
